Fillin' up the sponge
In many ways, we're much like a sponge. This sounds crazy, I know, but hear me out! Us humans absorb a lot of our characteristics and traits based on the things, places, and people we surround ourselves with. Much like a sponge, if we absorb clean water, what's going to come out of us? That's right, clean water. But what happens if we absorb dirty water? You know the answer to that one.
A sponge can only give one type of water, either clean or dirty, but it can't do both. This reminds me of a verse in James 3: 11-12 which reads, "Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water." (NIV)
You might see where this is going. We are like the sponge, the spring (fountain), or the tree. You see, we can't live as Christians when we're constantly dirtying ourselves up with the world. We can't pretend to speak eloquently at church, when we speak obscenities outside. We can't keep playing this little charade of "I'm a Christian today, and not tomorrow." The time has come for us to make a choice, are we going to steady ourselves and hold on to Jesus for the rest of our lives or are we going to let go and perish in the awfulness of this world? There is one choice here that will save us for all of eternity and let me give you a hint, it's not the second one. I'm not saying that you have to be perfect, none of us are, but we have to actively pursue the perfection that comes through Jesus Christ molding our lives in order for us to fulfill His perfect will for our lives. Because, in the end, our decision could save us from spending our eternity in Hell. I'm not trying to scare you or freak you out, I'm simply trying to address some important facts. We can't sugar-coat it here, because this is a choice only you can make.
Maybe your sponge has been absorbing dirt for a long time, and that's all that comes out of you. Like it says in Luke 6:45, "A good man brings good things out of the good stored in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of."
Here's a tough one, what is your mouth speaking? Are you using your words with kindness to build others up, or are you using them with hate and contempt, whilst tearing people down in the process? I know it might not be easy, but that's why God's not done with us! We're works in progress, and that's why we have to keep striving to soak up God's Word and fill our 'sponge' with his perfect holiness! Because, I assure you, Heaven is worth it! Keep on working toward every Christian's goal!
Also, here's a link to a song that I personally enjoy a lot, it reminds us that God's not done with us. It's called, "God's Not Done With You— Tauren Wells" God bless you, and go fill up your sponge with clean water!
